Description

Introduction

Join Alan in South Africa’s stunning Timbavati, an area of private reserves that offer a truly exclusive wildlife photography experience.

This is a safari designed for wildlife photographers by wildlife photographers. It isn’t a ‘box ticking tourist safari’, we’ll spend much more time with a species to photograph them in different light and from different angles. We’ll look to photograph animals exhibiting different behaviours and also interaction between themselves and other species. We welcome photographers of all levels and our approach is about having fun, experiencing incredible wildlife, all while learning photographic theory, techniques and fieldcraft to improve your skills and knowledge.

We’ll have exclusive use of a lodge in the middle of the reserve, surrounded by Africa’s ‘Big Five’ and beautiful scenery. In between our morning and afternoon / evening game drives we can relax, continue learning in small groups or individually as well as working on post-processing techniques (Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, Capture One).

In addition, you’ll get to contribute to elephant conservation. We’ve teamed up with Elephants Alive and we’ll be joining them on a game drive to track their elephants and help produce photographic ID kits.

The Wildlife

The wildlife is very relaxed around vehicles, allowing for phenomenal photographic opportunities. You can expect to photograph the ‘Big Five’ with ease, especially the often elusive leopard. It’s also a brilliant area for spotting the highly endangered white rhino and there’s also a chance of seeing lions carrying the white lion gene!

It’s not just about the ‘Big Five’ though, Timbavati is also home to giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah, hyena and there’s always a chance of seeing wild dogs.

Accommodation

We’ll be staying at a lodge in one of Timbavati’s game reserves – and we’ll have the whole place to ourselves. The lodge is a traditional African farmhouse, rustic and charming. The house has several communal spaces, an outside dining area, and a viewing tower overlooking a dam. Since we’ll be in the middle of a game reserve, you can expect to be able to do some game viewing right from your bedroom!

2021 Itinerary

20th July: Arrive in Hoedspruit where we’ll meet you and transfer you to the lodge in Timbavati.
21st – 25th July: Full days in the Timbavati with early morning than afternoon / evening game drives. We’ll have delicious breakfasts after our morning game drive and lunch while relaxing or running through some tutorials or post-processing. Later in the afternoon we’ll head out again to photograph the wildlife and enjoy some ‘sundowner’ drinks. We’ll return to the lodge for dinner and time again to relax.
26th July: After a last game drive in the morning, we’ll pack up and make our way back to the airport in Hoedspruit.
